A road map to 100 percent renewable energy in 139 countries by 2050
According to researchers, 139 countries have the potential to achieve 80 percent of their energy needs from clean, renewable sources by 2030 and 100 percent by 2050. The proposed energy mix for the 2050 target includes:
- 21.36 percent from photovoltaic solar plants
- 9.72 percent from concentrated solar plants
- 14.89 percent from residential rooftop solar
- 11.58 percent from commercial and government rooftop solar
- 23.52 percent from onshore wind
- 13.62 percent from offshore wind
- 4 percent from hydroelectric energy
- 0.58 percent from wave energy
- 0.67 percent from geothermal energy
- 0.06 percent from tidal turbine energy
The study leader, Mark Z. Jacobson, director of Stanford University’s Atmosphere and Energy Program, highlights that all the examined countries have sufficient resources to meet their energy demands. However, a few small countries with high populations might need to consider importing energy or relying more on offshore energy sources. The study’s findings showcase the exciting potential for a global shift towards renewable energy.
