Leveraging Fuel Cell Technology to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Lower Energy Bills
HILLSBORO, Oregon.
ClearEdge Power, a manufacturer of scalable, continuous onsite power systems, today announced that Roger’s Gardens, a destination home and garden store in California’s Orange County, has deployed a ClearEdge fuel cell system to contribute to its energy efficiency and sustainability goals.
By leveraging a 15-kW ClearEdge system, Roger’s Gardens will be able to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by more than 40 percent each year. In addition, the ClearEdge system will help Roger’s Gardens reduce its annual energy bills through the efficient, onsite generation of electricity and heat.

Known as “America’s Most Beautiful Home and Garden Center,” Roger’s Gardens has a strong commitment to the environment ranging from promoting sustainable plants and gardening practices to water conservation and energy efficiency programs. To build on that commitment while maintaining an overall aesthetic, including beautiful foliage and flowering plants, fountains and designer pottery, Roger’s Gardens selected the ClearEdge system. The high-efficiency fuel cell system will help power the facility’s operations and computer systems, while the heat generated as a byproduct of converting natural gas to electricity will be used to provide a reliable heat source for the nursery’s orchid area. This combination will help Roger’s Gardens eliminate 17.2 tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year and support the store’s energy independence.

The implementation at Roger’s Gardens is part of a diverse group of West Coast organizations participating in an innovative project supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. The project is designed to accelerate the application of fuel cell technologies in a variety of industries by demonstrating the significant environmental and cost savings delivered by combined heat and power fuel cell technologies. To verify the performance of the ClearEdge system at Roger’s Gardens, researchers at DOE’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) will analyze the technical, economic and environmental performance of the system.
