Solar Thermal Training – Austin, Texas – NEW Solar Thermal Design and Installation Class
ONTILITY announces that its Solar Thermal Design and Installation Training (S104) will be offered in Austin, Texas, March 15-19, 2010. The course follows the NABCEP® Solar Thermal task analysis, and satisfies an important requirement for NABCEP Solar Thermal Installer Certification.
Solar Certification Fast Track
More and more utility company rebate and other incentive programs are requiring that installers be certified. ONTILITY’s new 40 hour course (S104) fulfills the educational requirements for NABCEP’s® Solar Thermal Certification. Completing the S104 course reduces the required field experience from four years to two and qualifies course completers to sit for the NABCEP® Solar Thermal Installer Certification Exam.
Course Overview – About ONTILITY’s Solar Thermal Design and Installation
ONTILITY’s S104 class provides students with thorough knowledge of solar thermal collectors and other system components; plumbing methods and best practices, system design, estimation, and code requirements. Also covered are solar thermal products and applications; an understanding of energy conversion from sunlight to heat, and how to work with solar conversion equipment.
The course is designed for anyone interested in solar energy, those in career change who are interested in working in the solar energy industry, or contractors and business owners who want to expand into solar energy system design and installation. No prior knowledge or experience with solar energy is required.

Course Format
The 40 hour class consists of lectures, discussion, independent study and system installation labs led by Tim Coats, veteran solar thermal installer, system designer and instructor. Topics for study include:
- Solar radiation, heat transfer and thermodynamics
- Solar thermal markets and applications
- Recommended safety practices
- System specification and design for swimming pool and domestic hot water production
- System components
- Installation methods and best practices
Hands-on labs include roof mounting of collectors, plumbing basics, a full system installation and troubleshooting.
