TATA BP Solar Implements Solar Lighting Project using Sodium Oxide Lamps

The Hi-tech city flyover inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Dr. K. Rosaiah today has the distinction of being the first in using Solar Energy for lighting. The lighting system on the fly over uses energy efficient Sodium Oxide (SOX) Lamps which are charged by Solar Power. This Green initiative places HMDA as a pioneer in using Solar Energy and reduce the carbon foot print.

The solar lighting system on the fly over has been designed and implemented by TATA BP Solar Ltd, through their Business Partner Choice Solutions Ltd. TATA BP Solar is a JV Company of TATA Power and British petroleum. TATA BP Solar has been the pioneer in solar products and applications in India since 1989 and with their presence across the spectrum ranging from Solar Power Plants to Home Lighting and Water heating.

On this occasion, Mr. A. Bhanu Prakash, Chief Financial Officer & Director, Choice Solutions Ltd informed that the total solar energy absorbed by Earth’s atmosphere, oceans and land masses is approximately 3,850,000 exajoules (EJ) per year. In 2009, this was more energy in one hour than the world used in one year. Only a minuscule fraction of the available solar energy is used. He further said although generally underestimated, solar water heating and cooling is by far the most widely deployed solar technology with an estimated capacity of 154 GW as of 2007.

While many solar energy products are perceived to be used in Cities and towns, such renewable technologies are also suited to rural and remote areas, where energy is often crucial in human development
