There is a lot to SunPower – ( Solar Thermal Magazine)

Sunpower is a solar pv company that produces solar panels as well as other solar products. The company has enjoyed great success – they are the leading solar energy solution for homeowners and businesses worldwide. Since 1985, their global headquarters have been located in Silicon Valley, and they have generated more than 18,000,000 MWh in solar energy.

SunPower serves residential, utility and solar energy markets and their solar panels have the world’s highest efficiency ( according to the company).  They currently own more than 200 patents for solar powered technology. Sunpower is world famous.

The company has a rich history of accomplishments. In 1997 their solar cells were utilized by NASA. In 2014, SunPower was called the most dominant solar panel manufacturer in Silicon Valley. And in 2015 SunPower and First Solar announced their intentions to set up a joint yield company.

Sunpower’s main technology is the “Maxeon” cell – highly efficient solar cell designed to significantly increase energy density. The cells are packaged into solar panels which are also designed to increase the collection of power. The Maxeon cell begins with the same concepts as a basic silicon solar cell, but implements changes to the electrical connections. There is no silver wiring on the front, rather there is a see through material comprised of electrodes. On the back of the cell there is a thick copper layer which makes the electricity perform more efficiently.

After the cells are built, a robot is used to put the cells into six columns of that hold ten cells. A wire made of silver is woven in between the cells as they are soldered to the front and back. SunPower’s panels are similarly laid out and follow a similar concept, but uses improvements over regular sun panels that prevent failures like corrosion or electrical breaks.

SunPower has a number of notable popular projects that incorporate its solar technology. They have much construction in Spain, Korea and The Nellis Solar Power Plant in Nevada.

In 2008, SunPower announced with Agilent Technologies that they were installing a solar tracking system at Agilent that began making electricity that October. The system was a three acre canopy over the parking lot that included 3,500 SunPower solar panels. The design generated up to twenty five percent more energy for Agilent.

The company donated solar cells for NASA, for a record setting solar powered aircraft.

SunPower’s T20 Tracker project is the largest solar tracking system throughout Australia. It powers the first solar and diesel power station in the world. These power stations are expected to produce from . sixty to ninety percent of the remote communities’ electricity

SunPower partnered with Ford in 2011 to give customers who bought electric Ford cars the opportunity to install a solar panel on the rooftop to power the electric car. In 2012, SunPower completed the second solar panel installation on ZeroHouse 2.0 which is located on the east coast.

This home user solar energy and efficiency to produce as much energy as it actually uses, a massive success for the environment.
