The Next Stage of Development for the WEPTOS Wave Energy Converter

WEPTOS ( Solar Thermal Magazine) – After extensive testing in Spain and Denmark the WEPTOS has entered into the next stage which is prototype testing. I can only imagine how cool it would be as an engineer or technician to be working on a project like this one from the inception to see your designs come to life providing clean energy options for the planet.

Here is the timeline.

Phase I (Completed September 2011) is the construction of a large?scale model that enables for performance evaluation under realistic conditions, guaranteeing high quality results. The purpose is to use the facilities of one of the largest wave laboratories in Europe in order to gain the best knowledge on performance, structural endurance and ground forces. The large?scale model makes it possible to implement the functions of a full?scale WEPTOS production facility and enables for precise performance evaluation of the new, patented functions.

Phase II (2012?2014) is the design and the construction of a full?scale WEPTOS WEC for open water installation. The installation is followed by a one?year test period in a protected (low energy) area, assigned to bring focus on function and condition evaluation with the highest degree of safety. In this phase, WEPTOS expects to deliver a third of the maximum energy production and, to the extent possible, to bring this production to the market.

Phase III (2015) is the relocation and installation of the full?scale WEPTOS WEC to its final destination. Here, all functions as well as the energy production are studied and evaluated in relationship with the wave environment. The WEPTOS WEC is maintained in full capacity, and lifespan analyses as well as operating costs controls are carried out on an ongoing basis. The energy production is allocated through the grid and the project reaches its commercial status.
