There have been many designs and prototypes for devices that convert the energy in a wave to electricity over the last 30 years. Many of the designs were simply not tough enough to make it in the open ocean for any length of time. Others were just too expensive and hard to maintain.
Here is news of a relatively new design for converting the power of the waves that has actually been directly connected to the power grid in Gilbraltar.
