Elon Musk Says He Has Verbal Government Approval for Hyperloop Between New York and Washington DC

tweeted on Thursday that he has received “verbal approval” from the government to build an underground   in the Northeast corridor of the United States. The proposed would connect the city centers of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington DC, taking a mere 29 minutes to travel from New York to DC.

Musk conceded that there is still much work to be done to receive formal approval.  CNBC reports that both the City of New York and the City of Philadelphia know nothing about the project.

This is just the latest project proposal from the visionary entrepreneur.  Musk recently launched “” and has tasked it with developing the technology to dig tunnels fast and at a cost that is a magnitude of ten lower than current methods.  He envisions a large network of tunnels many levels deep that would fix congestion in any city, no matter how large it grew by adding new levels.  Since vehicles will be placed on a stabilized electric skate, the diameter of the tunnels can be reduced, which will help the company to reach their cost goals. Here is a video of how the system would work:

The electric skate is a flat plate on wheels propelled by an electric motor. According to The Boring Company’s website, this electric skate has the following advantages:

  • Increased safety. A fully stabilized autonomous vehicle eliminates human error and the ability to “swerve off-course.”
  • Increased speed. The controlled autonomous skate allows for speeds of 125 miles per hour in urban settings.
  • Multiple payloads. The electric skate can transport automobiles, goods, and/or people. And if one adds a vacuum shell, it is now a Hyperloop Pod which can travel at 600+ miles per hour.
  • Eliminating hazardous emissions. Electric skates are zero-emission vehicles, and thus do not output hazardous gases like internal combustion cars do.  Every mile the skate transports a gas-burning vehicle becomes a zero-emission mile.

Musk is also hoping to receive approval from the City of Los Angeles to build tunnels to ease traffic congestion in that city, and has already had discussions with the city’s Mayor.

In the video below, Musk outlines his vision for the future:
