Solar powered palm trees boost Dubai’s smart plans

Dubai has introduced solar-powered Wi-Fi stations called “Smart Palms” in popular outdoor locations like Umm Suqeim Beach and Za’abeel Park. These six-meter-tall structures, inspired by palm trees, offer free wireless internet access, weather information, and charging facilities for mobile devices. The Smart Palms are part of the UAE Cabinet Year of Innovation project and have been jointly developed by Dubai Municipality, D Idea Media, Du, Sun Tab Solar Energy, and Promo Tech Gulf Industry. The initiative aims to set up 103 Smart Palms across the city.

Each Smart Palm is equipped with photovoltaic panels on its fronds, capturing and storing solar energy during the day, which powers the facilities and illuminates the palm at night. The stations provide high-speed Wi-Fi to up to 50 users at a time within a range of 53 meters and offer phone and tablet charging points with faster charging speeds than regular plugs. Additionally, they feature screens displaying weather details, local news, navigation, general information about Dubai, and a selfie camera.

The project is considered an iconic fusion of easy access information, accessible Wi-Fi, and green technology. The city plans to expand the Smart Palm installations to other venues such as Dubai Creek Park, Al Mamzar Park, and Al Barsha Pond Park. Similar solar energy charging stations have been implemented in other cities like New York City and San Francisco. The Smart Palms exemplify Dubai’s commitment to technology and innovation, providing the public with valuable services in an environmentally friendly manner.
