Advances for the Siemen’s Electric Airplane Motor.
In order for electric airplanes to be feasible, we will need a motor that is both light and powerful. The craft will also need batteries that can carry a lot of power but also are light weight. You do not want to tens’ of thousand feet up in the air and suddenly need a recharge.
Siemens has developed a motor that they think will meet the requirements to propel and small manned airplane. The claim the new motor has an unparalleled power to weight ratio. It weighs only 50 kg and is capable of outputting 260 kilowatts.
Testing has begun in ernest and it is still an early prototype so we can expect this craft to evolve in the next few years. The day is coming when all light aircraft will be fully electric like this one.
It may take a while for the average airplane consumer to accept the non-combustion based planes. They will be faster and cheaper than existing planes so that will work in favor of electric technology.
How do you feel about the coming age of electric transportation? Did you expect it to be progressing so quickly?
