The first face-to-face module of the distance learning programme Especialización en Energías Renovables took place from the 22nd to the 26th February 2016. The Especialización is offered jointly by the EARTH University in Costa Rica and the German expert in capacity building Renewables Academy AG (RENAC). This one-year interdisciplinary programme covers renewable energy technologies, project development, support mechanisms, financing and profitability. The objective is to provide professionals from Latin America with the knowledge to progress in careers in the renewable energy sector.

During the on-campus week, participants from Costa Rica, Guatemala and Uruguay put the knowledge acquired during the first trimester into practice at the EARTH University. The face-to-face module combined practical exercises in the training center with field trips to real renewable energy installations. Technologies covered were photovoltaics, solar thermal, hydro power, wind power and biogas. Additionally, this experience allowed the students to get to know each other better, both personally and professionally. “The Especialización has a great content” commented Felipe Alfaro Solís, Civil Engineer in Costa Rica. “Not only is it a theoretical and practical tool, it is also a great life experience. It is an excellent opportunity.”
