The New Alchemy of Better Electric Car Battery Chemistry
The new science of electric car batteries
Electric Car Battery Chemistry – ( Solar Thermal Magazine)
In a remote research centre, at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology researchers are experimenting with new chemical compounds to develop the battery of the future. The team is hoping that fluoride-ion technology will allow future batteries to be able to save much more energy than previously known.
The electric car industry depends on development of future batteries and this team is hopeful that we will soon see batteries that allow electric car ranges of 500 km or more per charge. This freedom from fossil fuels and emissions is already allowing some very creative designs for a variety of electric vehicles.
Most of the battery technology available to consumers today is either lead acid ( very old chemistry) or lithium ion. There are many other types of battery chemistry in use and many more being investigated like this flouride-ion.
Electric car designs are getting cooler everyday
For any considering a career in chemistry or chemical engineering this is a fascinating and rewarding field.
