If you are looking to save some money on heating your home or apartment this winter and have some time on your hands and some basic hand tools you should take a look a this how to video instruction on building a passive solar thermal air heater.

This video provides very detailed instructions on how to build a passive solar air heater with very little expense or effort. The finished solar heater moves a lot of hot air and you won’t pay a dime to produce it.

The cold air enters through vents at the bottom of collector and is heated by the sun as it is pulled up through the seven columns of cans. The fan is included to also draw the heated air from the airspace surrounding the cans. This unit is made of used (and cleaned)  soup or vegetable cans, one 9 foot piece of wood makes the frame, cardboard for insulation (store-bought insulation board can be used as well), a 20″ by 32″ inch piece of plexi-glass and a computer cooling fan.

The air ducting is made of 3″ diameter aluminum duct that you can buy at any hardware store. The design goes completely off grid by using a 5 watt solar panel (or larger) to power the fan.

    This looks like an interesting project and I have seen others somewhat like this. Your video and instructions are not complete enough for someone with no experience in these types of projects. How and where is the fan installed? Soup cans go where exactly – cans open at both ends? No indications of where the insulation is installed. This all probably seems pretty simple to you, but maybe not so for others.
