Who Killed the Solar Thermal Parabolic Dish?

Solar Thermal Parabolic Dish ( Solar Thermal Magazine) – Stirling Energy Systems ( ), did not survive the test of time nor did their ambitious plan to deploy 20,000 solar thermal sun tracking dishes at one location. It would have been a sight to behold for sure.

This video from Sandia Laboratories which is a division of Lockheed Martin, explores the stirling engine solar thermal dish which is very effective in solar energy conversion but in the long run was more expensive than other forms or solar thermal energy such as parabolic and and even the solar tower.  With the added competition from decreasing solar photovoltaic modules this project headed to the back burner or maybe even the back room.

Enjoy the video. There may come a day when this technology returns.
