In response to a new report announcing that renewable energy installations accounted for 44 percent of the market share in 2013, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) issued the following statement from Keya Chatterjee, director of renewable energy and footprint outreach:
Now we’ve got the hard data to back up what we’ve been seeing in our local communities – we’re in the midst of a renewable energy revolution. The amount of renewable energy installed around the world last year has the same carbon impact as taking 99 percent of America’s cars off the road.
“Solar is on sale: the price of solar panels has dropped 80 percent since 2008. Regardless of politics or environmental awareness, who wouldn’t grab the chance to keep their energy costs flat – or free – for years to come?
“With the future of our planet at stake, ditching fossil fuels is both crucial and incredibly easy. Mass adoption of renewable energy is our number one option for mitigating climate change.
“A renewable market share of 44 percent is fantastic, but it’s just the start. Within my lifetime I fully expect the market share of renewables to reach 80 or 90 percent globally.”
