Solar Impulse 2 the Solar Plane to go around the world ( Solar Thermal Magazine) – I was fortunate enough to see in person the first generation of this solar plane when it flew across the United States last year. Needless to say, it was even more incredible to see up close. The Solar Impulse has the wing span of a 747 with a very tiny cockpit for the pilot. This cockpit for the first generation solar plane was not appropriate for the length of flight required to circumnavigate the globe which is the team’s ultimate goal.
With valuable insight from the first plane and the experience that they gained during this solo flight and others in Europe and Morocco, the team designed the Solar Impulse 2- the only plane of perpetual endurance, able to fly day and night on solar power, without a drop of fuel. I cant help but wonder or maybe it is dreaming of a time when all planes are solar powered even dream liner sized craft and military jets ( Maybe by then we will also be past the need for war machines. Ok this is probably too much of a dream right?)
This is only the beginning for what can be accomplished by open minded people out to change the world.
Here is the video of the official unveiling.
