St. David’s of Austin, Texas to Unveil Pilot Solar Project

Austin, Texas –A project that has been almost 10 years in the making will now allow St. David’s to harness 18% of its energy from solar panels installed on the top level of Pilot Solar Projectthe church’s parking garage. An idea that seemed impossible a few years ago, finally came together thanks to Austin Energy’s newly created pilot program. This pilot program allows St. David’s to use a sophisticated control system that permits the solar array to be connected to the utility’s electrical service, all while prohibiting excess generation of solar energy from back feeding into the downtown network. St. David’s is able to financially justify the solar investment by taking advantage of Austin Energy incentives, Federal incentives, low interest rates, and improved technology.

Not only will the solar panels allow St. David’s to save on energy costs, but it supports the church’s commitment to be a good steward of the environment. This solar project will have environmental savings similar to planting 4,356 trees in Texas’ parks. St. David’s is a certified GreenFaith Sanctuary, it houses and maintains a certified Wildlife Habitat in the middle of downtown, it is a City of Austin Green Business Partner (Platinum level); and the winner of the 2012 Keep Austin Beautiful Award in the category of Recycling and Waste Reduction.
