Australia Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA)  has  released a new report on the potential for integrating renewable energy generation into Australia’s existing fossil fuel power stations.

ARENA CEO Ivor Frischknecht said the report provided a timely and comprehensive overview of the renewable hybridisation landscape in Australia.

“ARENA commissioned this study to engage with industry, generate discussion and gauge ‘on the ground’ interest in renewable hybridisation as a viable energy solution,” Mr Frischknecht said.

“There is increasing recognition globally about the value of integrated renewable and fossil fuel energy – and our challenge, here in Australia, is to ensure we get the timing right to capitalise on such integration as part of our broader aim to diversify our energy mix.”

Parsons Brinkerhoff consulted widely with stakeholders in compiling the report and has concluded that there is a potential market for hybridisation of fossil fuel plants in Australia.

The report presents cost estimates for six key hybridisation opportunities in Australia.  Mr Frischknecht said the report was a vital first step in mapping the potential for renewable hybridisation.

“We know energy supply is a long-term game and ARENA is in the business of keeping an eye on the horizon,” Mr Frischknecht said.

“This study provides us with important information that will help us better plan for the future and will ensure Australia continues to develop and implement timely and affordable renewable energy solutions.”
