Solar thermal magazine Call for Entries: ComEd Launches Student Innovation Challenge

Illinois utility company ComEd, today announced the launch of its new “Student Innovation Challenge”, a contest that tasks college students with creating innovative smart meter related products, services or software apps that will help empower low-income customers to use their home’s smart meter to manage their electric bill and save energy.

The Student Innovation Challenge is part of ComEd’s Smart Grid Exchange, an initiative to develop a range of solutions, partnerships and programs that can work with the smart grid to deliver increased value to customers.

“Our aim is to maximize the value our customers realize from our investment in smart grid technology,” said Val Jensen, senior vice president of Customer Operations, ComEd. “We are excited to tap into the creativity and resources of the colleges and universities in our communities to help bring this value to our economically disadvantaged communities.”

Contest details

The ComEd Student Innovation Challenge is a two-phase contest with cash and prizes.

During Phase I, participants will submit a video, along with optional supporting documentation, explaining their idea and how it fulfills the Innovation Challenge. The Phase I entries will be judged by a panel, and the top five entries will go on to compete in Phase II where they will formally present their ideas to a panel of industry experts in October for a share of $10,000.

The ComEd Student Innovation Challenge is open to any individual student or team of two to five students (including recent graduates) attending any college or university within ComEd’s northern Illinois service territory. Students or student-teams must register to compete by June 15, 2014 by sending an email to [email protected] that includes the student’s name, area of study, school, email address and phone number. If submitting as a team, this information should be provided for each student on the team.
