Filipino-Korean Renewable Energy Developer Builds a Solar Power Plant in Mariveles Town

MARIVELES, Bataan.

Amid public uproar on skyrocketing electricity rates, a significant remedy to the country’s looming power woes will rise in Bataan as a Filipino-Korean renewable energy developer builds a solar power plant in Mariveles town.

This, as the Authority of the Freeport Area of Bataan (AFAB), recently signed a contract with Next Generation Power Technology Corp. (NGPT) to build a P2 billion solar power plant.

The plant, which will be capable of producing 20 megawatts of electricity, will be constructed in a 37.5-hectare lot inside the Freeport.

“We are very pleased to add NGPT to the FAB family. This project reaffirms our commitment to innovation and sustainable development in the FAB,” AFAB Chairman Deogracias Custodio said.

Custodio added that the solar power plant might also become an ecotourism attraction in the Freeport, which has vast water resources as it is bounded by the West Philippine Sea in the west and the Manila Bay in the east.

NGPT chief executive officer Charles Park expressed delight that the project will be pushed in FAB, which offers a myriad of tax incentives among others.

“They offered us a very good location for the solar power plant and we can enjoy incentives that we need to be able to start the project smoothly,” Park said.

In a separate interview to Renewable Energy Management Bureau director Mario Marasigan of the Department of Energy, he said that the additional capacity to be generated by the solar power plant would be a “big boost” to the country’s power supply less the pollution.

“The advantage of solar power is that the import of fuels used to generate electricity will be lessened plus the emission of pollution will be greatly reduced,” Marasigan said.

This soon-to-rise installation in Mariveles will be added to the list of solar power plants currently being built in the country that includes the 22 MW plant in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental.

At present, only one solar power plant is operating in the Philippines, which is the 1 MW Photovoltaic Power Plant of the Cagayan Electric Power & Light Co., Inc in Cagayan de Oro City. (CLJD/JMG-PIA 3)
