This June at a meeting of over 650 Concentrated Solar Power professionals the International Energy Agency (IEA) will present their roadmap for CSP. The Roadmap which was announced last week in Valencia during the Mediterranean Solar Plan Conference hosted by the Spanish presidency of the EU, emphasizes that solar energy could represent 20-25 per cent of global electricity production and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 6bnta by 2050. The roadmaps detail the technology milestones that would make this possible.
Speaking in Valencia IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka underscored that “This decade is crucial for effective policies to enable the development of solar electricity,” Mr. Tanaka said. “Long-term oriented, predictable solar-specific incentives are needed to sustain early deployment and bring both technologies to competitiveness in the most suitable locations and times.” These incentives will need to evolve over time to foster innovation and technology improvements. To support cost reductions and longer-term breakthroughs, governments also need to ensure long-term funding for additional research, development and demonstration efforts.”
Cedric Philibert, Senior Consultant at The International Energy Agency will be addressing the 650 strong crowds in San Francisco this June 24th, made up of leading developers, investors, policy makers and government and state bodies. Joshua Bull, North American Director for CSP Today, the conference organizers commented on the IEA’s presentation this June by saying “We are very keen to hear the IEA outline their roadmap for CSP at the conference this June. The industry in North America is poised for substantial growth and development over the next few years and we hope that this roadmap goes some way to fuelling this, it’s a very exciting time.”
The IEA expects CSP to become competitive for peak and mid-peak loads by 2020 in the sunniest places if appropriate policies are adopted, with North America the largest producer of CSP electricity, followed by North Africa and India. The overall contribution of CSP is expected to reach 11% or more of the global electricity demand by 2050.
